Alfred Otto Wolfgang Maria von Hofmannsthal was an Austrian playwright, poet, and librettist, and he is best known for his collaboration with Richard Strauss in the creation of five operas. He was also an essayist, diarist, and painter. His best known plays are the dramas Woyzeck (1925), The Blue Angel (1930; not produced until 1948), and Die Frau ohne Schatten (1939), which is regarded as one of the most important German dramas of the 20th century.
