The "L'Homme à la Cravate" is a fictional character created by the French writer and comedian Pierre Desproges (1880-1962). Desproges was a great master of the style of satirical and absurdist humour for which Charlie Chaplin is famous.
"L'Homme à la Cravate" first appeared in Desproges' play "Ma Cuchette" which was staged in 1936. Desproges based the character on his friend and fellow comedian Jacques Veyrat who was a classically trained violinist, singer and composer. The play was a hit and ran for a year. In 1938 Desproges published a book of his writings under the title "L'Homme à la Cravate". This is mostly an account of his experiences as a comedian in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s.
The name of the play is derived from the fact that Desproges used to wear a necktie when he performed (which he did in an effort to look more like a citizen, rather than an entertainer).
