Her mother, Johanna Porter, is an artist, and her father, Jeroen Porter, is a researcher. Juliana has two siblings: a younger sister Jacqueline (born 1976) and a younger brother Jelmer (born 1980). She attended the University of Twente from 2000–2003 to receive a BSc degree in psychology. She then went on to study clinical psychology at Utrecht University, from 2003–2006. At Utrecht she studied under the tutelage of professor Paul Dolan and under a master's program at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Juliana graduated with honors in 2006.
