Gwen was born in Los Angeles, California, on June 13, 1987. Gwen has two brothers, Eric and Annie. She is the youngest of her family, born to a mother who was a nurse and a father who owned a restaurant. The family lived in an apartment in Pasadena, California with Gwen's parents as well as her older brothers. Gwen's mother died when she was young and her father had remarried. She and her brothers were raised by a grandmother.
She attended the St. John Bosco High School and is currently taking online classes at UCLA in order to graduate in 3 years.
When Gwen was 8 years old, she began doing the voice for her younger sister, Annie, in the cartoon Annie, which was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions, Inc. Her first major role began in 1998 when she auditioned for the role of Annie for the television series "Annie". After winning the audition, she did her first voiceover for the character in 1999. That same year, she was cast as the title character in "Little People, Big World". She has voiced both characters ever since.
