Return of the Jedi
In Return of the Jedi, Ewoks appear as the guardians of the forest moon of Endor. When the Imperial Walkers destroy the shield generator protecting the forest moon, Ewoks sacrifice themselves to save the remaining Ewoks. Only Chief Chirpa survives, and joins the Rebel Alliance.
In the Expanded Universe
Ewoks were first mentioned in a story by Michael A. Stackpole in Star Wars Adventure Journal #8. Before this, Ewoks were only mentioned in a line of dialogue or two in the first draft of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, but were not featured in the final version of the film. The first full appearance of an Ewok was in Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi, a story that was included in Star Wars Tales 3 by Tom Veitch and Joann Sfar.
Ewoks have been featured prominently in the various Expanded Universe books, which often take place after Return of the Jedi.
