Basil's father was a great doctor of philosophy and took care of him in order to keep him away from the political struggles at the time. However, Basil's mother, who was a great philosopher herself, passed away when he was only 4 years old. As a result, he began to become more and more radical, because of his deep grief of the loss of his mother. He could not understand why those who took care of his well-being and supported his education were so willing to let him die in order to protect the secrets of their knowledge. This made him feel betrayed and with anger he began to fight against those who were supposed to be his "fathers". Basil felt that he was the only one who didn't want war and secrecy; therefore he was forced to go into hiding.
