The story is set on Earth. In the late 21st century, humanity has expanded beyond the Solar System and is beginning to colonize the stars. As revealed in "A Game of Sparks", humanity has colonised roughly 100,000 habitable stars by 2301, with a population of at least 2 billion people in colonial space. Colonies tend to be established by individuals who want to leave Earth for some reason, although some are established by governments (e.g. the United States of America). Colonies are often established for humanitarian purposes, such as the Utopian colonies established by the Transcendent Order (humanity's equivalent of the Bene Gesserit).
Colonial space is divided between the Alliance to Restore the Republic (known as the "new republic") on Earth and the Galactic Empire on the planet Coruscant. The Alliance was formed after a civil war in 2131, during which many colonies came under the control of various independence movements and terrorist organizations such as the Rebel Alliance.
