Shannon is a fictional character in the American science fiction television series "Firefly", portrayed by Alan Tudyk. He is the ship's mechanic on board the "Serenity". He is one of the few characters to appear in all five seasons, and was a regular character in both seasons. Tudyk has said that his character is based on himself, because he had served in the U.S. Navy, albeit not on a spaceship. The character first appeared in the series' pilot episode, "Serenity".
Shannon is an engineer, mechanic, and gunsmith. He was originally hired by Malcolm Reynolds to work on the "Serenity" after he and his crew destroyed the Oldsmobile factory, but he spent most of his time hiding in the engine room instead. He is known to be extremely competent at repairing and maintaining machinery, but he refuses to do things like repair a toilet. He also has an active imagination, his favorite stories being those about heroes who fight evil and save the world.
