They are willing to be selfless for the sake of others, even when there's no reward for it. The anime treats him like he's a woman, which is a little unbelievable to me. This is a character that's supposed to be manly, but he doesn't look masculine at all. He also has a sort of childish innocence that comes off as feminine and doesn't fit with the rest of the cast. I think a better comparison here would be with a female character like Serizawa from Kiznaiver. While Serizawa is a guy, and has a similar personality, I think his looks are closer to Honjou's than to the character in the anime. Honjou is an artistic and intellectual type with a strong desire for justice and a passion for helping others.
