In the TV series and film The Man Who Built America, the story of the United States is largely told through the eyes of Christopher Gist, a man who was born in 1716, in the town of Bethlehem, New Jersey.
He was born into a highly religious family, his mother a Quaker, his father a Presbyterian, who taught him that “religion was the only true foundation of morals and happiness.” Christopher would go on to become one of the most influential men of his time.
His father died when he was at just 16 years old. His uncle, a man who was considered a leader in both religious and political circles, took over for the Gist family. He too died young, leaving Christopher with a significant amount of wealth and resources.
A man whose values and morals matched Christopher’s own, this influential man convinced Christopher to move to New York City, where he could continue his studies and be part of the industrial and commercial revolution.
