Young, who is a Democrat, is the son of former U.S. Rep. Mike Young, whose district included much of central Minnesota. He grew up in Detroit Lakes, where his dad held office for almost a decade.
Young was an early supporter of Hillary Clinton, but switched to Bernie Sanders just weeks before the Democratic primary. He said he’s been mostly impressed by Sanders, who he said has an “incredible clarity” on major issues.
Young said he’s been able to talk with Sanders about almost any topic—from the breakup of the Soviet Union to the latest episode of “Star Trek.”
Young said he’s never been shy about sharing his opinions and doesn’t back down from a fight. He said he believes he can help bridge the ideological divide between the two parties and would be able to work with Republicans to find common ground.
“I believe I can bring people together, both sides of the aisle, and make a difference,” Young said.
