So here's the rub. I enjoyed the company of these types. But there's a problem. I'm not that type of person. That is to say, I don't have this "live in the moment" mentality. I don't enjoy the company of people who are too much like me.
I know why this is. It's because I've had it done to me. When I was a kid, my father was a single parent, and my mother worked two jobs to make ends meet. My childhood was an emotionally fraught time. I resented my father for not providing more support. I resented my mother for not being a better mother. I resented myself for being a kid who didn't get what he wanted. And, as every child does, I resented the people around me, thinking that they were all too similar to me, and that, if only everyone would be more like me, then all would be better.
The problem is that this is bullshit. It's a lie I told myself when I was nine years old. It's a lie that I told myself throughout my adult life to avoid pain and disappointment.
