Catherine de' Medici was born in 1519. She was born out of wedlock to Catherine de' Medici, a rich noble lady who had no children of her own. The father of Catherine de' Medici was the Duke of Urbino, Francesco Maria della Rovere. At the time, Catherine's mother was married to the Duke of Orléans, another powerful nobleman in France. As a child, Catherine suffered from a severe illness that left her deaf and mute (but not mentally retarded). Her mother, who loved her dearly, still insisted on keeping her close. Moreover, she did not want to be separated from her daughter. So Catherine lived with her mother at the court of the Duke of Orléans, who made sure she received the best education available at the time.
Catherine was tutored by highly educated and skilled people that worked for the Duke of Orléans.
