"The idea that someone would be an ENFP or an INTP is really intriguing, because neither of those is a common personality type," said Dr. Christine Ecker, professor of psychology at the University of Virginia and senior author of the study. "And yet we found that about one in every 10 people fits this combination."
The finding is significant because it shows that there are two different brain regions in the brain that are involved in the combination of these two personality types, said Ecker, who also is a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in Personality at the University of Virginia.
"While there are hundreds of personalities that are valid and useful in understanding humans, there are only a few that are important in understanding other mammals, and we haven't found many that fit the bill," Ecker said. "This combination of traits is important because it has lots of different implications."
The researchers used comprehensive genome-wide data gathered from more than 14,000 people in the United Kingdom as part of the International Twin Registry, which tracks nearly all twins who were born since January 1, 1993.
