Noctowl made its anime debut in New Plot, Odd Lot!, where Ash had to use it to battle his rival, Paul. It worked well, but was defeated by Paul's Electivire's Thunder Punch attack. This incident occurred just before New Plot, Odd Lot!, when Ash found out that he had to compete in the Indigo Plateau Conference. This caused Ash to have a lot of trouble with his Pokémon. However, in The Fleeing Tower of Sunyshore!, after some time of training with him, Noctowl was able to defeat Paul's Electivire.
