Augustus was the only son of Julius Caesar, who was assassinated on the Ides of March, 44 BC. His mother Octavia Minor and her lover Mark Antony were the last of the Caesars. Augustus was proclaimed the first Roman emperor following his victory at the Battle of Actium, in 31 BC. He adopted his name from his mother, in honour of her late husband, Gaius Octavius, who was also a famous general.
After Augustus’s death, Octavia married his stepson Tiberious and became empress dowager.
