Moldavite was first described in 1885 by Maximilian, Prince of Wied-Neuwied, who considered it to be a variety of corundum. The name "Moldavite" comes from the name of the country where it was first discovered: Moldavia. It received its present name in the 1920s, when it was shown to be a gemstone by Max Bergmann.
