For the past decade, I have been involved in the creation of an urban farm on a city block in the center of Austin, Texas. This has been a hard gig, but most of it has been joyous as well. At first people thought I was crazy, but then they realized that we had something special going on, so they wanted to be a part of it.
I have been working with a small team for the past nine years, and we have become quite close. The farm is now a community space where we grow food and host events. We hold farmers’ markets in the summer and host other events throughout the year. Throughout the day, we watch over the plants and animals that live on our farm as well as other members of the community, providing them with food and care when they need it.
Some people at the farm are on site for only a few hours each day, while others are there for long stretches. One person has been on site for almost every minute of every day since we started the farm nine years ago. I have learned a lot from this person, who is both my partner in life and my friend.
