The last of the three Triads to be known to the public was the Tongmenghui. It was founded in Guangzhou, Guangdong, in 1874. The organization was basically a secret society consisting of members of various secret societies, such as the White Lotus, the Bao'an, and the Yihui. They were united by a common goal: to expel the Europeans from China. During their activities, members often used the code name Tongmen (“Tongmen” literally means “Eastern Peace”), and their symbol was a red flower (the same one as Kim II Sung’s). The founders were mainly from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Fujian.
The Tongmenghui was initially a secret society, but in 1878 it began to move into the open, setting up “tongs” or branches in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Xiamen. These branches had a close relationship with the Chinese secret societies which had been suppressed by the Qing Dynasty following the Taiping Rebellion.
