Pavlov, Professor Ivan Petrovich (Soviet Marshall) – Marshal of the Soviet Union and Hero of the Soviet Union; he was known as the "Professor" for his military expertise and leadership. He was born on 6 May 1849 in St. Petersburg. He joined the Russian army in 1866 and became a staff officer, rising to the rank of colonel. He was wounded twice during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, and was awarded a number of decorations, including the Order of St. George. In 1911-12 he commanded the 2nd Army Corps, then the 6th Army Corps. In 1915 he became commander of the Caucasian Front, and in 1916, following the outbreak of World War I, he was made a General of the Infantry with the rank of lieutenant-general. In 1916 he became commander of the Southwestern Front, and in July 1917, he became commander of the Southern Front. He received numerous decorations for his service in World War I, culminating in the title of Marshal of the Soviet Union in 1935. He died on 8 October 1938.
