I teach the Myers-Briggs personality test at a college in Virginia. We use it to help our students understand themselves and their strengths and weaknesses as well as their potential for self-expression through careers.
My experience has been that people who are very enmeshed with their MBTI are frequently drawn to the very same professions that they would have picked anyway. People who are very drawn to the MBTI don't need to be told that what they're doing is a good fit. They already know it.
The MBTI tests type preferences and allows people to look at their preferences as they relate to their careers. It's not a test that makes someone say, "Oh, this is the best thing I've ever done." It's a test that allows people to know themselves better, which allows them to make better choices in their careers.
It's the tool of choice when we want people to understand themselves and make better choices in their careers.
