    Æthelflæd was the eldest daughter of Alfred the Great and his wife Ealhswith, and was born in the year 847 at a time when her father's rule was at its peak. When Alfred died in 899, Æthelflæd inherited the throne of Wessex and was crowned by Archbishop Aelfhere of Canterbury.

    When Æthelflæd first assumed power, she ruled with her brother Æthelred, but they were unable to keep their kingdom safe from Viking invaders. In 914, Æthelflæd married Æthelred's son Edward the Elder and lived with him at his court in Winchester.

    Æthelflæd and Edward had three children, though only two survived to adulthood, Edward and Æthelstan. In 925, Edward's death made Æthelflæd the sole ruler of England.

    Æthelflæd ruled for about thirty years.
