The woman, named Jane, tells him that he has been chosen to join a group of people who will be able to tap into people's minds. He is then taken to a beach where there are piles of skulls, one piled on top of the other, that are being washed up along with other bones. He is told that these are not human bones but belong to the "things" that the woman talked about.
