Sima Guang is the Confucian philosopher who has to guide the emperor but who is himself in danger of corruption by power and luxury. He is a sage in the Confucian tradition, not a mystic.
The term "Confucian" was first coined by the Han dynasty to distinguish themselves from the "Daoist" followers of Laozi. There were two types of Confucianism: "official" and "scholar". The scholar-official Confucianism was in competition with the mysticism of Taoism, which had its own variations in "Wayism", "Mountainism" and "Riverism". All three groups believed in a supreme god, Heaven, and all three groups believed in a supreme good, which was sometimes represented as the "Way" of rulership, the sacred Tao or the river of Tao with its source in Heaven. The official way was divinely-ordained and never changed, whereas the scholar-official Confucian was part of a dynamic moral system that could evolve over time. That's why "Confucius" became a generic name for all scholars, not just for one particular philosopher.
