The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality test designed to provide a basic understanding of how people perceive themselves and others. It is a psychometric assessment that uses a dichotomous categorization system. Each person is placed into one of four categories based on their answers to a series of questions about their personality, history, and preferences.
The MBTI was developed by Carl Jung in 1932. Jung believed that the unconscious mind contains a set of cognitive functions which regulate our behavior and interactions. The MBTI measures those functions. The system is based on Jung’s concept of psychological types, which he identified in his book Psychological Types. Those types can then be further subdivided into four groups or “temperaments”:
