Needleman personality type is INTP, and I think it's pretty clear that the relationship between your personality type and your relationship with your parents is going to be a bit different. (I have a friend who was very Introverted, but he married an Extraverted woman. They've been together for over 20 years now and are still going strong.)
When I think of my parents, I remember them as being pretty reserved, introspective people. They didn't really talk much about their own personal experiences because they didn't think about themselves too much. They were very much focused on our family and our lives. They were very good at the "We are a family" thing. They were also good at discussing abstract concepts and taking care of our needs, like food and shelter and so on.
But once we got older, the focus on our family waned and we started to take more of an active role in our lives. They got less and less involved in our lives, but they never stopped caring. When I was a teen, they never spoke harshly to me, but they did a good job at ignoring me when I was being immature.
