The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator was initially designed in the 1940s by Isabel Myers and Katharine Cook Briggs, who were originally interested in determining how well students of different backgrounds could be grouped into different types. They began by asking 5,000 students to complete a brief questionnaire based on the letters of the alphabet, and then compiled the results into four groups according to how they tended to respond to questions. They then sent out questionnaires to other psychologists and social workers, asking them to type the students they had been working with. The resulting type descriptions were compiled in a book, which was published in 1952.
There are thousands of personality descriptions that have been devised since then, but Myers-Briggs still remains the most widely used. It has been translated into 44 languages, and is used by millions of people around the world.
