Mertz’s parents were young high school teachers and they encouraged their children to follow their dreams. Mertz’s father was a musician and her mother played the piano and sang. They encouraged Mertz to play the piano and sing and push herself as she always had her dream to be in a band. Mertz’s parents music influenced her to pursue her music career. She had a paper route in high school, where she would deliver the morning paper to homes which paid for the jazz station on the radio. After high school, Mertz moved to Los Angeles to attend the University of Southern California and earned her undergraduate degree in Music.
Mertz was first introduced to the music industry in 1985 at age 21, when she was asked to audition for MCA Records. She was hired by MCA, and in 1987 she released her debut single "I'm A Lady" on MCA Records. The song was a minor hit, reaching #42 on the "Billboard" Hot 100, but she never recorded another song for the label.
