The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was a state that existed from 1569 until the end of World War I; it was formed when the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth was partitioned in 1795 by the Russian Empire, Prussia and Austria, as part of the Third Partition of Poland. It was one of the largest and most populous countries in Europe before World War I, but was divided by the Russian, Prussian and Austrian empires. The Commonwealth was never a single state, but rather a confederation of multiple self-governing Lithuanian, Polish, Ruthenian, Ukrainian, Belarusian and Ukrainian-Byelorussian statelets. Each had its own parliament, constitution, laws and administration. They were sometimes united under the crown of the king of Poland, who was elected by a small council of nobles that consisted of Lithuanians, Poles and Ruthenians.

Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was a successor state to the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth that existed between 1569 and 1795.
