Growing up in the former state of East Germany, she was exposed to a heavy dose of repression and ideology. She was a little girl who liked to draw and color. She was deeply affected by the Stasi, the government’s secret police who had a complete control over the country and even her life. The Stasi was involved in everything; like delivering mail, collecting taxes and spying on citizens.
She was also heavily influenced by her mother who worked as a schoolteacher. She was extremely kind-hearted, nurturing and compassionate. She was also a very good poet and writer who was also a member of the Communist Party.
Becoming a mother herself, Jana grew up with a family that supported her in every way. Her husband was also supportive and understanding of her ambitions to become an artist. However, the East German government did not approve and even threatened her to get divorced or lose her job.
Nevertheless, she continued writing and illustrating until one day she was caught by the Stasi and forced to write a poem.
