After graduating he joined the Turkish Ministry of Justice as an attorney. In 1956 he moved to the U.S. He married Hedy and they had two children, daughter, Nancy and son, Peter.
Günter began teaching international law at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1963 and continued teaching there until he retired in 1994. Günter also served on the faculty of the Harvard Law School from 1967-1970 and again from 1976 to 1986. His most noted work was on the subject of human rights law.
