Günter Kirişçi was born on November 13, 1927 in Istanbul, Turkey. He was an exceptional student who graduated from high school with honors. He went on to study law at Marmara University and graduated at the top of his class. Günter received a scholarship to study at Harvard Law School where he graduated with honors in 1951. After graduating he joined the Turkish Ministry of Justice as an attorney. In 1956 he moved to the U.S. He married Hedy and they had two children, daughter, Nancy and son, Peter.
Günter began teaching international law at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1963 and continued teaching there until he retired in 1994. Günter also served on the faculty of the Harvard Law School from 1967-1970 and again from 1976 to 1986. His most noted work was on the subject of human rights law.
