She adds: “He’s very honest. He tells you straight up if he thinks you’re wrong. That’s important to me.”
The couple met at a coffee shop in the Spring of 2011, not long after he got back from Afghanistan. Although he was raised in a very religious family, he didn’t feel particularly close to his parents or siblings. “You grow up, you get away from home, and you don’t want to go back,” he says. “It was hard for me to find my place, so I went to college. I played hockey in college, and that was a lot of fun. But it was hard to find a community again. I found people who were like me.”
He continued to play hockey after college, but he lacked direction. “I didn’t have a plan,” he says.
