He is a Finnish-born illustrator working in the United States. Born in Helsinki, he moved to the United States in the 1980s. He is married to American artist Dianne Freedman. Together they have two sons and a daughter, a set of twins, and a set of triplets.
Salin was born in Helsinki, Finland. His parents are both teachers, and his father was a member of the Finnish parliament for the Centre Party from 1970–75. Salin attended an international boarding school in Switzerland from 1966 to 1970, where he spent his first three years studying English, French and German. After returning to Finland, he was educated at the University of Helsinki, where he studied international relations, and graduated with a degree in politics. By his own admission, he had trouble fitting into the university environment and eventually dropped out shortly before completing his studies.
After graduating, Salin moved to New York City to work for "Time" magazine as a staff photographer. In 1982 he began a series of illustrations for "The New Yorker" that were published between 1982 and 1992.
