Mil MI-28 "Havoc" personality type is ISTJ, which makes him a very loyal and devoted friend, as well as a staunch family man. These are not things that make him popular with his coworkers, many of whom are ISFJ.
His sense of duty is probably why he joined the military in the first place. When he got out, he did not become a mechanic, but rather an officer in the Air Force Reserves. His first assignment was at the Pentagon! He is a veteran of two wars, so he is very knowledgeable about the military. He is also a very good leader, and has been known to train up to thirty-five men and women at a time in how to use non-standard weapons.
He is very proud of his military service, and apparently has received some awards over the years. I haven't seen any, but I have read in some of the books that he was awarded the Air Force's highest honor, the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal. There was another character in one of the books who was a pilot with the Air Force when it was still called the Air Corps. He had been stationed at Groom Lake.
