The Sesquipedale plant first came to the attention of botanists in 1816, when the Dutch botanist, Hermann Burmeister, was sent by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to South America to find suitable plants for cultivation. He was well-known for his discovery of the Saguaro cactus and the Agave plant.
Burmeister's assistant, Eduard Friedrich Fourcroy, returned to Europe with some seeds of the Sesquipedale plant and planted them in gardens in Holland and England.
