In the face of all this, I was pretty sure I was going to be a terrible person as an adult. If I couldn’t handle being a kid, what would I be like as a young adult? A nightmare. I was afraid I’d be a horrible parent. That fear is why – when I was a teenager – I never dated.
I ended up taking my fear and running away from it. By the time I was in high school, I had already been married for three years. We had two kids. I was working full time and my husband was working full time. The kids were with me all the time. There was no time for dating.
My husband and I had a very open relationship. When we were married, we talked about being open. We were in love. We wanted to have a life together. It just didn’t work out that way.
When we divorced, we were both in our thirties. He had two kids and I had two kids. We had a lot of bad fights over the years over who had custody of the kids. We weren’t happy.
