Carl Jung and the theory of archetypes
Carl Jung was an important psychologist of the 20th century. Jung's theory of archetypes is the idea that human beings have inherited deep, almost instinctive, characteristics which can be found in all cultures. Jung's theory of archetypes also applies to fictional characters and fictional works. For example, characters in a book can be considered a type of archetype.
Jung's theory of archetypes favours the idea of the collective unconscious. This is because there seems to be a strong correspondence between the archetypes and common features of human behaviour. If we look at a list of these common features, we can see that they are quite distinct from one another. For example, there's a distinct difference between the archetype of the tree and an oak tree. The tree is more abstract and refers to flowers and trees in general, while the oak is more specific, referring to the specific tree with a particular name. In other words, there seems to be a distinct difference between the archetypes and the archetypal common features.
