I think Rinne's main personality trait is his naivety; he's very innocent, often acting like a child. He doesn't feel comfortable asking others for help because he doesn't want to burden them but, at the same time, he's not all that strong on his own. He's embarrassed when others hold him, but that's because he feels that they want so much from him. He's very easily hurt by people who don't take him seriously and he has a hard time understanding their intentions. I think that's why he's so eager to do things alone: he wants to protect himself and doesn't want to depend on anyone else, but at the same time he doesn't want to hurt anyone else either.
I think when Rinne is together with his friends, he's a lot more comfortable in his own skin; he feels he can be himself around them and doesn't feel embarrassed. I think it's only with girls that he becomes really shy, even if he tries to hide it. He's really gentle with them and protective of them, like the way Shintarou does with Kouka.
