Unfortunately, many of my observations are subjective. Additionally, I haven't read the manga yet–I just watched the first couple of episodes. I'm also not very well-versed in Korean culture (other than the obvious references to Korean history).
The series starts off with a bang. The first five or so episodes comprise a flashback/premonition of Jung Woo-Young's life. In this life, Woo-Young is a drug dealer and is driven to near suicide after losing a shipment of high-quality drugs. Before he can take his own life, he is saved by the police, who run into him by accident.
Through a series of flashbacks, we follow Woo-Young's life as a gangster in both the past and present. As the series progresses, we get a better understanding of his character and his motivation.
The main theme of this series is Jung Woo-Young's struggle to live a meaningful life after being driven to madness by his own desires. He is torn between the life he has led, and the life he could have had.
