“I’m really good at writing, at acting, at singing, at doing whatever anyone needs me to do,” she said. “I grew up in a family where everyone was really supportive of my artistic talents, but none of us were particularly good at any one thing.”
After graduating from high school, Ms. Kelly submitted her writing to several agents. Two rejected her work, but one said he liked her voice and encouraged her to audition for television.
She took the advice and called the network office in Hollywood.
“I was told that if I could bring a tape of my writing, my artwork and my singing, they would be willing to put me on tape for an audition. I went back to New York and sent them everything. They said ‘okay, come out to L.A. for an audition.’ ”
Ms. Kelly flew out with her mother, who was the family's housekeeper. She got green-lighted on the spot.
