Mazarin was born on 2 March 1602, in Paris, France. His mother was Françoise de Longueval, born at Le Quesnoy, and his father was Claude de La Baume Mazarin, born at Saint-Germain-en-Laye. From his mother's side, he was of the House of Longueval (also known as "Le Grand Longueval"), which had produced several knights of the royal arms. His maternal grandfather, Gaspard de Schomberg, was master of the Order of the Holy Spirit from 1515 until 1521.
