Personality type is a somewhat controversial issue among psychologists. A controversial aspect of the model is that it assigns a specific personality trait to an individual's personality. The vast majority of personality tests use self-report questionnaires that ask respondents to describe themselves. The Five Factor Model, however, assigns a personality type to an individual based on their responses to the questionnaire. This is one of the most controversial aspects of the model because it places a label on a person without actually knowing that person's real personality. Personality type theory is sometimes questioned due to this aspect.

Two reviews have been written about the model in the "Journal of Personality" in 2002 and 2007. A study was conducted in which the combination of Jungian and Five Factor Model traits were collected from the same individuals using two different measures (i.e., one measure had higher validity than the other). The study concluded that "the combination of Jungian and Five Factor models was supported even though both models showed adequate levels of internal consistency".
