In Marvel's The Avengers #1, we get a look at what's going on with the team. The Avengers are in a meeting, and Captain America announces that they've been invited to a party at Stark Tower, which is pretty amazing. Thor replies by asking what the party is for, which is a good question.
We then get a look at a flashback of how this all started. Thor was in a meeting with Tony Stark, and he had a vision of a war, saying that it was a fight between humans and aliens on Earth. Tony Stark replied by asking what would happen if the aliens won the battle, and Thor said that they would wipe out Asgard, which is why he brought up the party.
The Avengers are having a meeting about the new threat the aliens have created. Captain America brings up the fact that they have to do something about it, but also that their last encounter with these aliens ended up with them being captured by the Skrulls.
