He was born in Chiang Mai, where he was staying in his grandparents' house for a few years. In his childhood days, he had the opportunity to live in the United States for some time, where he had an American-Thai style education. After he returned to Chiang Mai, he lived with his grandparents, his father and his mother in Chiang Mai. It was also during that time he became interested in cooking. He was trained under his father's tutelage in cooking techniques, and his mother taught him the art of baking. At the age of 16, his mother got married, and his family moved to Bangkok. His mother's side of the family owns a restaurant in Bangkok called "Chez Lam". Lan's mother eventually opened her own restaurant called "Chez Kantha" in Bangkok.
Lan became interested in cooking by watching his father cook at home and at work. He used to visit the market to look at the different fruits and vegetables.
