I have some personal experience with this type. I am an ISFP and have spent most of my life as the Smiling Man. The fact that I have spent most of my life as this persona has a lot to do with my mother. She was an ISTJ and her interactions with me were extremely limited. She did not see what I saw, nor did she understand me or my needs. She also saw me as a sort of spectacle, but without the sense of humor to understand why I was doing what I was doing.
The ISTJ type is often characterized as practical and methodical, but this is not the case with my mother. She was somewhat scatterbrained and not very coordinated, so she did not see how routine things were for me. I had routines and there was no sense of incongruity in my behavior. She had no idea that I was not just eccentric, but that I was also extremely stressed out by the strictness of the ISFJs around me.
