She was raised by her mother and aunt, who were both mediums – so Martha was likely exposed to spiritualism from an early age.
In 1984, when Martha was five years old, one of the mediums she knew had a near-death experience (NDE) and came to the conclusion that the afterlife was a place of total darkness. This revelation was so shocking that it forced the other medium to leave the business.
Soon afterwards, Martha had her first experience of a NDE that was accompanied by a vision of a dark tunnel, with white lights along the sides. The tunnel was so intense that Martha's eyes were filled with tears. Her mother and aunt (who had also had their NDEs) told her "this is normal".
That was the start of her journey into the world of ghost hunting.
