She got involved with Make It Right after attending a TED talk given by architect Frank Gehry. In the talk, he explained how he had designed a house for himself that incorporated natural building materials, such as recycled wood and reclaimed windows. When she heard about his vision for creating a house that fit its location and would be sustainable, she became interested.
Ellie joined Make It Right in 2009 and served as a spokesperson for the organization. She helped with fundraising, and also helped design the house.
Ellie received an honorary degree from Rhode Island School of Design in 2011.
