In the film, Hallorann is unable to cope with Wendy's death. When he goes back to the Overlook Hotel, he is permanently changed by the events that occurred there. He becomes extremely paranoid, and uses a Swiss Army knife to kill anyone who he believes is after him (including family, hotel employees, and random guests). He also sees ghosts in the hotel, and kills them in order to protect himself.
As the film progresses, Hallorann becomes more like the other characters in the story, such as Jack Torrance and Danny Torrance. He eventually becomes obsessed with Wendy and will do anything to protect her from The Overlook's many dangers. However, his obsession begins to drive him insane.
