If I have one regret about being a parent, it's that I wish I could make sure my children grew up knowing how to think for themselves.
My son was born in 2000. He was a very curious and intelligent little boy. I often found myself cringing in pity on his behalf, when he tried to explain to me what he was learning in school, or why he was getting an A in math, or why he had to do his homework early that night.
It didn't take long for me to realize that if I really want him to grow up with an independent and rational outlook on life, I may need to do my best to steer him away from the influence of parents like me. So I crafted a few simple rules, which I've been slowly imposing on him ever since.
Rule #1: You, as a child, are not a parent.
You are a child. You are not a parent. You do not have the authority to tell your parents what to do. Parents, no matter how old you are, will always be your parents.
