Kutakhov was born in 1977 in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia. He grew up in a poor family, his father worked in the oil industry and his mother was a housewife. Kutakhov started out as a cross-country skier, representing the region of Khanty-Mansiysk. He was quite successful on the international level, but decided to take an engineering course instead. Kutakhov graduated from the Polytechnic Institute of Civil Engineering in 1999.
Kutakhov first came to the national team in 1999 and competed at the World Championships that year in Sestriere, Italy. In 2001 he won the national title in Akvaisk ski jumping and was selected to compete at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, but did not make it to the finals. He finished 20th out of 24 competitors. In 2003 he won the World Cup overall rank for the second time and was selected for the Olympic team once again.
